right now at 5:00 a.m. we begin with a storm team 4 weather alert right now at 5:00 a.m. it's still early but the heat is here. a warning about the triple digit temperatures. the feel-like temperature we could see today. a night of tension and change. congestion solution. a new way to ease traffic on one of the area's busiest roads. i'm aaron gilchrist. i'm eun yang. the kind of day you need the extra water, maybe short sleeves. the portable fan you can carry around. you can feel the heat as soon as you walk out the door. >> sheena parveen is here with the forecast. check in on the

the capitol beltway, no real issues reported in maryland or virginia. in maryland, traveling northbound on route 4, before 3301 at mt. zie on marlboro road, a crash to the single file right in order to get by there. otherwise, you're traveling at this point on the rock creek parkway. still alternating traffic both ways. but northbound 95 the crash is clear. all travel lanes are open. live from the wtop traffic center, i'm rob stallworth. folks, back to you. >> it's 5:02. breaking news near philadelphia. two trains crash there. you're looking at pictures from police in upper darby, pennsylvania west of the city. >> one of the trains was not moving. the other one has dozens of passengers on board. >> there's blood everywhere. the driver banged up and this one girl bleeding out of her face pretty bad. >> 42 people were hurt and four,

critical condition. police say no one died in this crash. we're expecting more information from police today. our partner station in philadelphia is working to learn what caused this crash. president of the united states. ♪ >> president trump's speech to the nation is something you will likely hear a lot about today. in an address to the nation and in front of service members, the president laid out his strategy for the afghanistan war. >> it is a plan he described as a shift from a time-based approach to one based on conditions. left out specifics, but he did make a promise. >> from now on victory will have a clear definition. attacking our enemies, obliterating isis, crushing al qaeda. preventing the taliban from taking over afghanistan. and stopping

against america before they emerge. >> the president did not discuss any additional troops in the speech, but it is likely the new strategy means several thousand more u.s. troops to afghanistan. today, president trump is headed to phoenix, arizona, where police are preparing for large protests. city leaders voiced concern that the rally is too soon after the violence in charlottesville. now police are concerned about clashes between the supporters for the president who are expected to flood the convention center and opponents outside. a live report from capitol hill on the pushback the president is getting ahead of this trip. new this morning, new plans for the robert e. lee statue. the focal point of the violence in charlottesville. it is coming down sooner than expected. >> the charlottesville city council is speeding up the process for two

monuments, one of stone wall jackson. last night's meeting was flooded with tension. some accused them of not intervening in the violence two weekends ago. a white nationalist rally over the removal of the statue led to one woman's death. it was not that long ago that hundreds of families woke up in the dark in temple hills. the same families could be kicked out of their homes as soon as today. >> justin finch joining us live from the condos in temple hills to tell us about the looming deadline. justin? >> reporter: aaron, good morning. a few lights are turning on this morning. the fire department says there are about 100 people still living in the condos here. these are families, senior citizens, children who could now be ours from being forced to leave. it's a major fire safety --he

prince george's fire department will return this morning to look around. their walk ended with the last three notices of fire codes. including lack of secured doors, a need for removal of trash and debris as well as needed repairs to doors. safety and security is an ongoing issue here. inside we found signs of disrepair from holes in the ceilings to a lack of working fire extinguishers. then, as you mentioned, back in october of last year, the power and gas was shut off because you had a mounting utility bill here owed of more than a million dollars. we spoke to a mother of six who said after housing issues rides, her housing problems do not. >> i have six children. i have a newborn, an infant and my son has autism. where are we supposed to go? >> reporter: and, again, the condos here have until 8:00 this morning to

william parkway. it's a really busy road that spans much of the region. if they're trying to figure out when what to do from the bull run area. matt, a better idea of what we're talking about potentially doing work to. engser expanding the road in that area, it's probably a nonstarter. there are probably a few businesses that would have to be taken or moved. that would be expensive. the virginia transportation authority is coming up with a plan to basically connect some of the side roads that parallel 28. we'll have to see if that comes into focus. there is a big public meeting coming up in the next couple of weeks. we'll follow it or for you. in the meantime, we'll see if anything happens on this road o to ease the congestion. not something you'd want to smell around dinnertime or any time you're awake. >> or asleep. or ever. maybe not when you're dead

temperatures in store. let's check traffic with rob stallworth at wtop. good morning, rob. >> good morning, sheena. if you're headed out the door, be mindful northbound 95, we had a crash in lorton and then one in newington. the hov lanes are blocked teu to an early morning crash. northbound on route 4 in maryland, we have the crash, you have to stay right in order to get by. from the wtop traffic center, i'm rob stallworth, back to you. rob, thank you. breaking news just coming into our newsroom now from bwi marshall airport. there's a security investigation going on there right now. it has closed two checkpoints into the airport. the airport tweeted that early this morning. flights will likely be affected. but they've not provided any more information on what the security issue is. we'll update you as we get more information. if you have a flight

your eye on this closure of two check points. the navy is stepping up the search for two missing sailors. divers will access the rooms on the u.s.s. john mccain and conduct an assessment. the ship collided with an oil tanker. the top admiral ordered the entire 7th fleet to stop operations for one day to make sure they are running the ship safely. get the camera out of -- >> that is video of the suspect in the clinton murder's mother attacking our photographer outside court. before the confrontation here, a judge ordered a mental health evaluation for that suspect. he would be yelling out during his hearing yesterday.

6-year-old sister and two young cousins to death. his mother found the girl's body at the family's home in clinton. a woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer has just won a huge lawsuit against johnson & johnson. a los angeles jury says the company has to pay more than $400 million to her. she complained that the talc in the iconic baby powder caused ovarian cancer. this is one among a number of lawsuits including one from a virginia woman. johnson & johnson plans to appeal the decision. 5:18 now. while many of us had our eyes on the sky yesterday during the solar eclipse, there were some who were opening their eyes for the first time. >> we're talking about the babies who were born yesterday.

live to capitol hill for more on why he's already facing backlash before arriving in phoenix. >> people who live at the condominiums in temple hill will find out if they have to move out. that building must pass a fire safety inspection by this norng. last week, the prince george's fire department declared the building unsafe. last year, the residents had to leave because utilities were shut off. >> it is 5:34. breaking news right now. after a serious crash outside of philadelphia. >> train filled with people struck another train. matt delucia from our sister station in philadelphia is in upper darby, pennsylvania. >> reporter: investigators with the transit agencies, they are here trying to find out what caused this crash early this morning. right behind me, that is one of the damaged cars as it sits and the investigators are poring over the evidence trying to figure out what caused this

early this more than r morning. 42 people were injured. four critically. video from the scene earlier. authorities tell us this crash happened just after midnight. the inbound high-speed line train was coming into this hub, the transportation center. the train crashed into another train that was parked and occupied. as you can imagine, we spoke with one of the passengers who was on that train and we spoke with him just after he got off. >> my face hit the wall. put a big hole in the wall. i wept straight down. i blacked out. it was loud. i mean, and it hurt. >> reporter: to recap, more than 3 dozen people injured, including four people who are critically injured. big question right now, how did this happen? investigators working to figure that out. i'm matt delucia in upper darby. back to you. 75 years is the sentence handed to a

george's school county aid convicted of sex crimes against children. that will not be the end of it. prosecutors plan to take him back to court next month. they say he need to be held accountable to the local counts against him. caraway pled guilty to abusing at least 20 children at the elementary school where he worked. he is one of the employees recently arrested for abusing students who worked in a school without a license, wednesday, the news 4 i-team investigates who is and is not required to be licensed and why some are pushing for more oversight of all adults who work around children. it looks like the purple line is ready to roll. maryland governor hogan expected to sign a federal funding agreement tore that project soon. the governor's office says this new agreement would free up $325 million already appropriated. 16-mile purple line would connect montgomery and prince george's county. they estimated a

driving around this morning. one of the ideas is how do we get everyone flowing on 28. this is a busy corridor. from prince william parkway to loudoun. 28 has become a busy road. doesn't flow easy. how do you fix it? take a look at the this map. they're trying to figure out what to do around bull run, the prince william parkway. a look at the drive cam. you can see how congested it is out here at 5:51 in the morning. it is tough to ride on this road. you can't widen it. there are a lot of businesses on side of this road. you could potentially connect the side road in manassas and the manassas park area. there's going to be a series of public meetings coming up on this. >> adam tuss on the roads for us. in northern virginia, adam thanks. teach evers and students in our

school. many schools are in desperate need of substitute teachers. scott macfarlane explains what's causing the shortage. >> the new school year begins with a severe shortage of substitute teachers a krorsing to a review of human resource record. this fight before several breaks. at prince george's county, they operated with fewer than is 00 -- we found continual shortfalls, in some cases on the first day of classes. in fairfax, a newsletter said the problem was so severe, some teachers were asked to cover two classes at once. >> there's not enough people doing their job. >> not enough want to do it? >> correct. >> they're busy trying to recruit subs for in school year. how does this impact the
